  • Hi Members,

I saw this story and just had to share it........

Ella a Rottweiler was emaciated and drinking from a drainage ditch along an empty stretch of highway. Kathy who found the dog works for a rescue shelter, says it's typical for people to dump unwanted pets in the middle of nowhere - but again, the dog's demeanor convinced her there was more to the story. So she did some detective work, and what she found is a heart-wrenching tale of unending loyalty.

Kathy found the first clues to this mystery - broken glass and tail lights - right near where she found the dog. And just down from there, she found a second set of even more intriguing clues: personal items gathered up. By the dog, she assumed.

"It was like she was sleeping with them - or waiting with them," Kathy said. Kathy remembered two weeks earlier she'd driven by an accident on the same stretch of highway. She remembered because it was such a horrible crash. A single car had flipped over and landed on the side of the road, at just about the same spot where she found the dog.

She called highway patrol and learned that the family had survived the crash. Thrown from the car, rescue crews never saw the dog. She spent 13 days scavenging for food along the highway - and 13 nights bedding down with whatever she could find that smelled like her lost family.

"That's the last spot she saw her family and she was going to stay there," Kathy said.

After two weeks believing that their dog, Ella, had died, the family of Joe and Michelle Kelly got the most wonderful, slobbery surprise of their lives.

For the first time since the accident, the Kelly's had a good reason to cry -all thanks to a dog who refused to forget her family - and the stranger who refused to take lost for answer.

Unfortunately, it was a bittersweet reunion because of the accident and the medical expenses, the Kelly family has had to temporarily relocate to a place that doesn't allow dogs.

The good news is, Kathy has promised to hold onto Ella for as long as the Kelleys need to get back on their feet.

Here is a picture of Ella and Kathy:

There is one major problem in this story for me. This is suppose to be a happy ending reuniting with her family.  Here is a dog who has undying loyalty to her family and they give her up again?? I can understand if there is financial set backs, but there is somethings you just don’t give up! I would go to the ends of the earth to find a place who would take in my dog.

Do you think this family was right in giving up Ella after just finding her?

  • I think they didn't have a choice.  If they didn't have a lot of money to begin with, and they just moved to a place that didn't allow dogs... not much they can do.  It does say she was keeping the dog till they could get back on their feet.  If they fail in being good 'parents' in the long run it looks like Ella found a wonderful foster home.

  • I agree, they haven't given her up "Totally" Alot of places won't allow pets (Many here too) and so the volunteer is being VERY generous saying she'll keep the dog till they get back on their feet...

Reminds me of the "Good Samaritian" story.

  • I think they did what they had to do. If where they are now doesn't allow dogs, they can't be expected to just get up and move again. It must be devistating for that family to have lost Ella once again. Hopefully they will find a way to take her home eventually, but as toodle said, she has found a loving home for now.

  • I know if that was me i would search the world over for a place that would accept my dog. Even if i had to make a public plea with all the publicity this story got and ask any landlord to please take my dog in. Surely to God someone would. Especially this dog that went 13 days and would not leave the scene of the accident and nearly died.

You couldn't pry that dog away from me with a crow bar!

  • Im with you on this Lips... If this was my dog I would do anything to keep him/her with me...

Dogs are more loyal then some ppl I know... they offer you unconditional love and thats something we should all respect...

    just my two cents

  • I would never stop looking for a place that would accept my dog.

I'd live in my car first, before I would let that dog out of my sight, ever again.

    I swear I would.

God Bless Ella and her unending loyalty.  smiley smiley

Gawd, dogs are amazing.  Ella sat there waiting for them to come back to get her.

Some folks might not agree with me, but it doesnt bother me. I know what I would do in this situation, and that dog would never leave my side again.

  • I did some research on this story on the web and everywhere i looked including forums dedicated to this........i did not see one response of how anyone thought it was awful that they gave this dog up!!

I am reading how it had a happy ending everywhere, when in fact i was thinking happy?? They gave this precious creature up after it would of died to show its loyalty........sigh.

That's why i felt so compelled to write about it here. I didn't know if it was just me or not........i'm glad to know others do feel the same.....thank you!!

  • I see your point Lips, dogs are amazingly loyal- or vicous and horrible like the pit bull that attacked me when I was 12 laugh_out_loud- but as a mother with 2 young children, if it were a home for my kids or a home for the dog, I'm choosing the home for my kids.  Knowing that my beloved pet had a loving place to stay where I could visit until I found a more suitable place would mean the world to me of course.  If that situation happened to me, I don't believe in coincidences like that, so I would be searching for a new place ASAP.

  • Oh tood im so sorry u got attacked... sad. It is hard to recover and build a trust in a dog after like something like that happens.

Omg is that your precious little baby!!! How adorable and  blessed you are!!

I actually spent 4 months living out of a ford van with my 2 dogs when I couldn't find a place which would allow me to rent with them. Then got a small shed for all of us. Cost me some money$ but worth it. I'll never forget their love and acceptance of me.
