I'm a French citizen but spent a lot of time in Norway for my studies. And in Norway (in Sweden as well), the Eurovision song contest is taken very seriously. "Melodifestivalen" is almost a religion there! For us French citizens, we don't care about the contest and mostly make fun of it. To be honest, we hate it. We always predict the results beforehand (Sweden voting for Norway? Norway voting for Sweden? Russia voting for Belarus? Cyprus voting for Greece? What big surprises...). Eurovision has become a geopolitical contest to say the least. Best songs never win anyway.
This year though, France is ranked #2 by the bookmakers. I don't think this will change the way we perceive the contest in our country. Anyway, how important is the Eurovion song contest in your respective countries?
And you, away from Europe, have you ever heard of the Eurovision song contest?

Political - definitely. Enjoyable - absolutely!
The "woman" with the beard winning in 2014 was the "Wurst" if you'll pardon the pun ....awful song, awful singer....awful
If anyone has not seen it, you can view it here and give your own opinion.
The Netherlands should have won with Calm after the Storm -

It's a pretty big deal in Romania, quite a few people watch it every year. Unfortunately this year Romania will not take part because the Romanian Public TV broadcaster has failed to pay their debts to the European Broadcasting Union.
The voting is mostly geo-political, I agree, but most times it's a pretty enjoyable show. -

The Austrian singer will sing in French this year. This will offer a refreshing pause in this all-globish show. However, we should restore the old rule (people should sing in one of their official languages). This is what Europe is about after all. And back in 2004, Lena Philipsson could have won singing in Swedish https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jF4Sp2p8X1Q. Too bad she sang in English and delivered an awful performance https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=na2qDYmm7LM...

Well for the first time in my country our singer will be singing on English, instead on out motherland Serbian language as it used to be case. It used to attract might higher audience inhere in past, but in last few years, as we don't have good candidate barely anyone is talking about it. I will be watching it as always for sure.

I'll be watching it for sure, because I find it very entertaining even though it is rather predictable - we all know who's going to vote for whom.
So, I don't hate it, but I'll make fun of it. And I agree that in Serbia it is not a big deal, many people are not paying any attention to it. -

My favourite song that year!
[quote]Too many songs is like "ooh la la " mode.
Quite true. Maybe because of the extensive use of Global English which dumbs down the quality of the songs (2 or 3 concepts - love, heartbreak, party - and a hundreds of words at most - I miss you, I love you, let's go party). Many people consider that singing in English is important in order to be understood by a large proportion of the population. In my opinion, there is absolutely no point understanding a stupid song whatsoever! -

Absolutely. I don't need to hear the same lyrics over and over again. It should be sung in different languages at least.
I think that singing in native languages should be a requirement. -

Have you noticed my motto (j'aime j'aime la vie, bravo pour le défi)? In fact, this sentence is taken from Sandra Kim's winning song j'aime la vie (I love life) in 1986 in Bergen, Norway, second to last francophone winner at the ESC before Celine Dion in 1988. Kitch at its best https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=chWaLZ1PA4U

I never heard of Eurovision but that song above was really cool and all the makeup that went into making them up. I listen to the next song ( wild dances ) and it pretty much sucked for me...lol -
