  • Hiya Guys and Dolls,

I just read that JC Penny department store is going to get rid of all the cashiers and replace them with self check-out by 2013! This really kinda ticks me off because we are turning more and more to technology that does not require real live workers.

We are quickly losing the need for manpower in a world that finding a job is tough enough without replacing us with a computer, automation or self serve counters.

Do you think the government should step in and prevent this from happening before one day we all wake up and find out we have been replaced by artificial means?

    Lips

  • That's a scary thing and it's probably going to be a nightmare. When you have just a few things self checkout is fine but when you have a lot it's a pain. People always have problems and I always seem to be behind them.

We aren't going to have any jobs in the future if things go this way between this sort of thing and customer service being held in other countries besides the home countries of these companies. Scary times.

  • i think the government should absolutely NOT step in, in any way shape or form....let JC penney go under for having such a dumb idea and the industry will decide against the practice....i already dont go to stores that dont have "real" people available....they would pay dearly in sales

  • What's wrong if it's convenient? I mean, we're gambling online rather than the land-based because it's been simplified; there's no "I can see you"-managers, pit bosses, or floor runners online. We send emails rather than employing route-postal workers. We pump our own gas because it's cheaper, quicker than hiring a pimply kid to pump it for us.

  • i think with the average workforce in session, heh, at least from my locality's (USA) overall work aptitude this is a blessing of improvement in services..

  • automated services work all the time......it just wont work at jc penney....and to use the example of "online gambling" is absolutely crazy  because how much of a pain in the ass is it solely because there is no human interaction?  ever had any issues at a land based casinos? versus any issues online.....very poor example to make your case on this one,  we send emails because as a society we are too lazy to write on paper and too cheap to buy a stamp (has nothing to do with automation) (maybe technology but nobody ever stopped writing letters because the mailman pissed them off)  and we pump our own gas because "full service gas stations"  (they pumped gas, checked fluid levels, air pressure....the whole nine yards)  no longer exist as we routinely buy gas at food marts.  JC penney will be out of business in one year or less if they go all-in on this policy.  and timwilcob......it sounds like the schools in your area really need help if self checkout would be a blessing of improved services....NO computer could ever even think about keeping up with a skilled cashier....never

    uhm...
  • and to use the example of "online gambling" is absolutely crazy  because how much of a pain in the ass is it solely because there is no human interaction?  ever had any issues at a land based casinos?

It's LESS hassle for me. I gamble at reputable online casinos. I don't have to waste gas. I don't have to wait for a particular machine, for a floor runner to fill it with paper, an attendant to hand pay me a hundred bucks to keep playing etc

we send emails because as a society we are too lazy to write on paper and too cheap to buy a stamp (has nothing to do with automation) (maybe technology but nobody ever stopped writing letters because the mailman pissed them off)

Sure it does. A carrier has to well, carry the mail. The internet sends it in 2 minutes. Why the Hell would I want to mail something in my city, when it takes a team of people three days to move it three blocks, when automation (email) sends it in 2 minutes or less. Noon'es ever been pissed at a postal worker?  I have. Wrong mail, mail in the grass or sprinkler or rain, instead of my box. Hotmail doesnt get my mail wet.

and we pump our own gas because "full service gas stations"  (they pumped gas, checked fluid levels, air pressure....the whole nine yards)  no longer exist as we routinely buy gas at food marts

I don't know where you live, but we still have 'gas stations', full serve and self serve. I CHOOSE to pump my own because it's cheaper. The full serve costs more because of the HUMAN element

  • Are JC Penny knocking 10% off the cost of your goods with this new self serve thing coming in?  I bet they aren't.  So they get to charge you the same price for a job you'll be doing yourself!

    blue

  • I agree with dabigdog, they might be losing sales if they implement those machines. Some people like to have a real person to talk to when paying for the groceries, especially elderly people. I see that all the time at the supermarket I go to for shopping.

People want human interaction these days, probably because we have less and less of that.

well,  it sounds like you will be a very lonely person on your planet
  • well,  it sounds like you will be a very lonely person on your planet ? this coming from a damned darwinian planetarian obviously , why man are you here to make personal attacks on members ? swear everytime i read a thread on here someone has to make it a personal issue to every comment someone has.. vicious atmosphere i blame the states and their savage society i sorry guys

  • The only one i see attacking is you tim not only a member but people from the USA. I would hardly say that our forum is a "vicious" one and if memory serves me right you have had your moments of not being so friendly for which you were quickly forgiven.

You have not only attacked a member but an entire culture one of which you belong to and quite frankly is not very cool.

I hardly think the comments made here were "vicious" until now.

  •         Let's face it,  sounds like their just being @#$%^&* cheap!!  I really hate that aspect of human nature.  Anyway,  I  think customer service has definitely gone downhill in this country.  Just call  your credit card or bank  for service and you're likely to get someone thousands of miles away on the phone when your bank is just down the street!!!  I would prefer the human interaction/service, I just think it makes for better customer loyalty.  Everyone has their preferences and I'm cool with that, just sayin'  for me...

  • well,  it sounds like you will be a very lonely person on your planet

It's called Earth. You know, the one where people generally are ALLOWED to have dissenting opinions. Being of a different opinion, doesn't always equate to bring wrong..or lonely

  • Out of curiosity lips, why did you only say thank you to posts that agreed with your side? You did ask for opinions. Doesn't mine deserve a thank you?

Do you think the government should step in and prevent this from happening before one day we all wake up and find out we have been replaced by artificial means?

  • nope

  • I don't deserve a thank you?

  • Anyway, no I don't think the government should step in. Who says jobs are being lost anyway? Blue-collar jobs maybe. But people and companies still have to write the programmes, check the machines...people are still being employed at the insurance companies for them, to repair them, to instal them, to maintain them. Managers still have to review them and employees still need to work in the offices.
Automation isn't necessarily 'bad'. We all drive cars, but we don't all buy ones assembled by the small guy or shop or mechanic but purchase the factor-made one. A few of us buy computers made and put together by the small guy. the rest of us buy the one pumped out of the factory. I prefer my atm card then driving my butt to a bank to withdraw just to 'chat' with a teller' when there's a machine 10 blocks closer. I'd sooner pay my bills online than running to twelve different offices to pay a clerk.
It's the nature of the world. We could watch plays and puppet-shows performed by actors out in the world, but we choose (most of us) to sit in and watch tv. Yes, there's a great argument to say telly rots the brain and hasn't helped us in any way, but it doesn't stop millions of us turning in every day even to watch reruns where noone new is being employed. If JC wants to dump a few employees to install machines, well, that's their prerogative. If not, well, let's also go after virtually every industry in the 21st century

HAHAHAHHAHAHAHAH  you are toooo funny....you have got to slow down on your smoking...it makes you have strange thoughts tim
  •         Meeeyooww!!!  Dang Lips,  good topic I didn't think this would stir up so many emotions.  We're all friends here, no need to keep it this real.  dtsweet, you make some good points.  I think there is a lot of confusion and misinformation about automation...  I think it actually creates more jobs like you said.  the machinery involved always needs human involvement at some level.  We're not quite at "Skynet" level yet where the machines maintain and repair themselves autonomously.    Personally though, I do like to be able to deal with  service people  "most" of the time.
Maybe if they automated the DMV  the lines wouldn't be so long.... hmm now there's a thought......

  • LOL, the DWV robots could not only take the insults, but could probably be designed to take a punch or two

  • What is a DMV?

  • ok....side bet.....1000 us dollars....if JC penney goes all in with the automated tellers/ no live cashiers.......they will bust or reverse the policy within six months.....IT WONT WORK at jc penney...  and DT i am sorry if you didnt get any thankyous...but i will say thanks because you make me laugh alot

  • laugh_out_loud

Sorry had to laugh out loud laugh_out_loud

Blueday, a DMV is the Department of Motor Vehicles in the US. Each state has their own DMV and sometimes they are named a bit differently. But, they are where you get your driver's license and vehicle registrations.

They are what you would know, being a Brit, as the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency. The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency is an Executive Agency of the Department for Transport (DfT).

  • Actually my DMV is semi-automated.  When you enter you go to one desk.   Depending on the service you need like car registration, drivers license, california ID, or driving test, etc,  you are issued a number that begins with a letter that routes you to the correct station/person.  You have a seat.  I always take reading material.  When your number is announced over the loudspeaker  you go to the station number the automated voice sends you to....no lines.  Your number is not only announced but also shown on large monitors.  There is also a rss feed that shows approximate wait time.  I love it. 8'|

  •               Hey katt,  thanks you saved me having to explain it. laugh_out_loud

  • wow guys i have really missed you all and back on point,i hope the idea doesnt stick or we will have alot of people with nothing to do 8'|

Thanks Katt.  I thought it was some sort of a car laugh_out_loud.

Yes your DMV is equivalent to our DVLA.  Thanks again.

  • Well, I found out that Fred Meyer and Wal-Mart have dropped or are considering dropping the "Self-checkout" type of sales. People prefer the human interaction they found. This plus theft rates are probably the reason.

  • In this economy,  JCP is trying to stay afloat, but no one has pointed out the obvious. It's  JC PENNEY exclamation!!!!!! Giving stuff away free will not bring back customers.

    please dont hate messenger!

    imakin1

  • that will dramatically reduce costs for them so lets hope they pass the savings on to the consumers

  • make it a point not to shop there exclamation!!

  • ya i thought about how much easier it would be for people to get past the machines and gert extra savings  sad
