  • I just saw a comercial on tv about animal cruelty and it got me thinking...why bother to show these and who comes up with the idea of what is cruelty to animals?? It's horrific to drown a litter of kittens but it's ok to electicute hundreds of geese in an effort to control over population...it's a jailable offence to shoot a dog but it's ok to shoot a deer and hang it's head on your wall? There are thousands of animals humans kill just for sport (deer, ducks, squirrels, ect.) or because they annoy you (rabbits, mice, bugs; ect.), but a select few have been deemed adorable and considered "pets". What makes certain animals more deserving of others and who comes up with these standards? This is something I will never understand....

  • I'm vegetarian, I don't even eat them, but I think it comes down to if you can pet it (dog races bad, horse races good) or if it's cute (poor bunnies, damn rodents) the distinction comes from how well one humanizes with them..it's hypocricy at its finest.

  • Very true....and poor bunnies are on both sides of the fence. Some people keep them as pets while others kill them for getting in their gardens, same goes for pet horses and racing ones... it really is a shame how people justify right and wrong when it comes to an animal... sad

  • If an animal is to be killed, it needs to be as humane as possible.  Does it suck, yeah. i've watched enough nature shows and lions eating on a still alive baby antelope to not feel too bad about the burger I'm chewing on. My husband is a hunter and a fisher and I would rather eat a deer killed instantly with a bullet than a pig left in a tiny crate it's whole life and slaughtered poorly.

  • wmmeden, it's nice to know, there are a few of us in here, who understand life, and know how it all plays out!

  • This is why children should be brought to church/ temple.  The lack of religious instruction is producing a BAD payoff.

  • I'll pass on the religious structure thanks; I'd rather they learn a sense of right and wrong on principle, not the fear of Hell and damnation

  • Doc,

Not to bash any religion but some of the strongest bible thumpers are the worst of humankind.

Sitting in a church does not make a person morally strong. SOMETIMES it gives some a sense of "I sat in a pew for an hour and now I can do whatever the heck I want.. I can repent next Sunday."

Moral character comes from within/family/good friends/ and faith but not 4 walls of mortar once a week. smiley

  • Wow...this thread took a little turn here...not sure how religion got into this. All I was saying is that I think it's so strange where people came up with the idea of which animals have rights and which ones don't.

Someone mentioned above about not feeling bad for eating certain animals....I'm no vegetarian myself and I don't feel bad about eating anything...what I was saying is why can't I kill a dog as humainly as possible and eat it... i would go to jail if I did and most would consider me disgusting for it but a deer would be ok??  I just don't see where one life is more meaningful than the other....sigh!

ps...people eat dog/cat in other countrys so maybe the dog thing is just for usa??

  • The commercial i believe is a bit sadistic aim at making the public aware of animal cruelty... and abuse.. think it was poorly written and portrayed ..
very condescension where not present in many of our households i'm quite certain

  • Back on topic.....:)

I eat meat but would never want to tour a slaughterhouse.

I think there is a reason for killing some animals.  I would rather see a deer killed quickly with a bullet than starve in the brutal winter.

Never understood certain 'sport' kills.  Cock fighting, Bull fighting, dog fighting.... all make me sick.

Poor animals crammed in tiny cages, force fed things to plump them up, cows that can barely walk whipped to make it across the line for selling... all that for a buck is awful.

  • It goes to show you that we are a product of our environment and raised in a society of what is proper and what is not,

I literally can not bear the torture of ANY animals. I can hardly handle dogs being abused without taking on the world of animals on my shoulders. It is just something i know i can't control and have to bury my head when it comes to the slaughter and hunt of prey.

I know it's wrong for me to have that mentality because if everyone thought that way about issues there would never be change in this world. But this is an area i'm just too darn weak to handle.

  • Hahaha...kinda on subject...I still wonder who came up with the idea to eat a crab, they look ugly not to mention they pinch and their hard as hell to get into...but i'm sure glad someone decided they were worth eating!!      :D

    I eat nothing from water.

I watch alot of cooking shows and they often say... If you're going to kill something for food, make sure you respect it and make it's loss of life worthwhile.  Chefs get ticked beyond belief if something loses it's life and is burnt/undercooked or just plain unappetizing.
  • Keep in mind folks, most religious people aren't motivated to be "moral" based on so called Bible thumping and fear of damnation.  The ones that do get all the publicity.  So, Gabby, I agree.  Plenty of Bible thumpers are the worst of humankind.  And, I agree religious fundamentalism is a BIG problem in the world today.  But, most religious people are not like that.  They are moral out of a high sense of their love of God and the historic structure of their religion gives them a great foundation to base their morals.

For example, many many hospitals were built due to the morality of religious people.  Ask those suffering in poor countries what they think of the morality of religious people who work (without pay often) to render aid and help.  1000s of colleges and universities were built by religious people who felt it was right, morally, for people to have an education.

Also, look at the statistics.  Religious people give far greater percentages of their incomes to help the poor than non-religious.

The idea of being moral all-on-my own sounds nice and independent, but, everyone being their own moral tyrannt doesn't work either and seems to have produced the same results as the Bible thumpers.

So...I fully realize the problems of organized religion, but as a whole, I don't see what has done better in relieving human suffering over the centuries.

Just some thoughts from the Mind Doc, a sinner in God's recovery program.
