Being in California, I am amazed at how little the news people know about earthquakes.
A CNN reporter, from NYC, asked Caltech Seisemon Kate Hutton if there were warnings right before the earthquake. She said there weren't but that is in the science community.
It was reported that animals in both Washington DC's Zoo and NYC Zoo were acting strange hours before the earthquake; chimps and apes were screaming and others were huddled together in tight groups, a defense against unknown predators.
P waves travel faster than S waves in an earthquake.
In the late 80s, you could go to Home Depot and buy an Earthquake detector that looked like a smoke detector. It registered P wave movement before an earthquake and gave a warning; anywhere from one to five minutes.  I had one that actually went off 2 minutes before the 1994 Northridge quake. Unfortunately, it also went off whenever a large truck or bus drove by my condo, so I just ignored the warning.
It was a good idea, just not perfect. Now, you can't even find them.
Where were you went the quake hit and did you feel it?

At first I thought the people below done blew up their kitchen and when the whole place started shaking I thought the place was gonna crumble so I ran to the room to wake my boyfriend up and get the hell out of the house...got outside and it was shaking there also lol...I had clue what was going on!

Sounds a lot like my first experience with an earthquake.
Now, after living in CA for so many years, it hardly affects me.
There is a funny scene in LA Story with Steve Martin where he and a group of people at an outdoor cafe eating brunch.
An earthquake starts and amid the shaking, everyone is guessing the size of the quake.
That is how you feel after being in so many but, boy, that first one really scares you

We felt here in Cleveland Ohio.  I thought husband was pushing on my chair, here at puter.  I looked over at him and he was staring at me wide eyed and then i did same lol  The place was rocking and nothing fun was going on hehhehe

I was in Seward, Alaska for the 1964 earthquake.  It was 8.1 and it was horrible.  Tidal wave and all.  After shocks went on for couple days.  Huge oil tanks were blowing up all nite.  The town was under armed guard for quite awhile.  My family and lots of others had to live at the National Guard Armory (I think that is what its called) for some time, because our houses were a wreck and roads were either flooded out or turned upside down, and inside out and it just plain wasnt safe.  It was the single most scary thing i have ever been thru, and i have been thru some stuff!

OMG, BBL, I was watching a documentary on that earthquake, The Good Friday Quake, right?
They said it lasted for almost 30 minutes
I can't even imagine something that big lasting that long, there would be nothing left if it happened in California or along the Pacific Northwest; which is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyy overdue (according to another documentary)
