  • Hiya Guys and Gals,

All of us seem to reply to a post that is the law abiding right thing to do in accordance with the law. Now here is a law that i wonder what you would if it happened to you. I actually experienced this a couple years ago.....

Outside my window i saw a commotion going on in the street. As i took a closer look i saw a teenage girl pinned to the ground as 2 teenage boys held her arms so she couldn't fight back. While she lay on the ground defenseless, 2 girls were beating her to a pulp.

I immediately ran outside. I don't know what made me more sick....the poor girl getting beat up or the onlookers who did nothing! Cars slowed down, people gathered to watch. Some of these people were adults and they did absolutely nothing to stop it! I flew in the house called 911. As the operator picked up, i hung before i could even say a  word because the fight was escalating so bad i felt like i needed to step in with no time to waste.

My instinct kicked in and i flew down my front porch stairs into the street where it was taking place. I was ready for battle! I would of done anything to protect this girl. But see here is the thing. By law i am not allowed to touch a minor. If i so much laid a finger on one of them i could be thrown in the slammer. But i did not care!

I ran up to them hollering and screaming and shaking my fist. I stood in front of the girl and pushed her off and the other girl got so startled she backed off too. At this point the police came in a second. 911 is excellent. They were able to trace my land line phone and location and came asap!

My question is this........would you be a law abiding citizen and not fight off these teenagers. Or would you step in and face the consequences to protect this girl?         Evidently every adult bystander there felt they were obeying the law or flat out didn't care.

    What would you do?

  • I'd step in and protect the girl.

I believe there are sub-clauses in the Good Samaritan Doctrine that protects citizens that are trying to help.

Good Samaritan laws protect the general public from undue liability during good faith rescue attempts.

  • Step in.  And I've stepped in before too.  Good for you Lips.

  • Step in and break it up.......

  • Definitely step in.  I could not live with myself if I didn't.

  • I believe I would have stepped in and I'll mention this for others, that even if those committing the assault are minors, you CAN intervene and push them back or more if they attack you. Nothing wrong with self-defense.

  • I would have stepped in-law or no law. It is not ok to hurt another human being unless you are protecting yourself or someone else.

  • I beleive the only person that was obeying any law was you Lips, i'd of kicked some of those bystanders a**es for just standing back staring at the little girl being beat. Thats sickening, in that treachary of a scene someone could of been badly hurt or even died. It's a good thing you were there to protect her, cheers to you Lips.. you're a hero.

  • I have stepped in with grown men, in a parking lot at a Mall in the middle of the day. Big crowds all round and grown men that did not intervene. I ran up crashed thru the crowd and into the circle they called me every name in the book even threw me into the crowd i kept coming back and a screaming match but bottom line it stopped. Good Samaritan Act does protect you. My favorite TV show is "What Would You Do" it shows real live situations hidden cameras on various topics of issues, asking yourself What would you Do? One of them was actors on a street beating up and harrassing a homeless man, then a homeless woman several people helped her.

If you saw a Homeless person being beat up would you help? sorry lips maybe I should create another post? Did not mean to hijack your post.
  • There is a caveat to this I feel need be mentioned:  Do step in to diffuse the situation only if you judge it to be relatively safe for you.

I've been in a situation similar to lucky8's.  I was in a parking lot of shopping center where 2 guys were beating up an elderly man.  I wasn't thinking, didnt even take a quick look around, just reacted, and stepped in to try and help.  Next thing I knew 2 other guys popped out of no where, I was laid out on the floor with a huge swollen ear, and split chin requiring stitches.  Embarrassing!

But since then, I've been drinking my milk, and eating my Wheaties, I'm now better prepared.  lol

  • Good job, Lips!

I think you are misunderstanding the law.  The presumption not "to touch a minor" does NOT apply to stoping a criminal act.

    lmao.  sorry, my dirty mind.
  • When it comes to children or even teenagers, im going to say in MOST.. there is some sore of instinct in them that prevents them from hitting an adult in a situation like this, to stop and listen compared to another teenager yelling to stop this..BUT in the cases of grown adults fighting each other, strange to say but it does and can get worse.

  • i would do the same as you did---law or not law---in such a moment you must do what you have to do

  • Correct.  If you see a teenager committing a violent crime against another person,  you can use "necessary force" to stop it.

  • ishin.....I am the the REST of her does a good job, too!

  • ishin.....I am the the REST of her does a good job, too!

    huh?
  • I'm very proud of you for doing this, Lips! I know how few people would do the same, as I know of a couple of similar situations myself. And in my country, people aren't generally law-abiding. But not many would step in. For one, I think I'd collect enough courage to do so.

  • ishin.....I am the the REST of her does a good job, too!

    huh?

That goes double for me huh?
  • well i know i would have i had it happen to me when two of my sons friends(16)started fighting after a football game. These kids were 16 and giants im 5'6 they were well over 6ft .The other kids looked like they were enjoying the fight but i stepped in between them and stopped it with no aide from the other kids.(the things we do different as adults lol)

  • ishin....sorry, I was bibbing some Scotch when I wrote that!

I meant to write:  "I am sure the rest of her does a good job, too!"

No, i love when threads evolve! Omg if it was a homeless man it would  be worse. I tend to go for the underdog.

For some reason that seems even more cruel to me. The person is suffering enough in their life. I couldn't stand by. I think i would see RED!!!
