  • Hi Guys and Dolls,

    Here is the scene:

Your driving along a road late at night and there is not a car for miles. I out of the blue someone bolts in front of your car on foot. The person instantly dies from the impact. It appears that it was suicide on the part of the pedestrian.

If reported, you will go to prison for manslaughter. No one is around for miles and your able to leave the scene and never get caught.

    Would you turn yourself in?

    Lips
  • You would get caught.  The police are very good at tracking situations like this down.  Call 911 and fess up.

  • Doc,

This hyothetical......you will not get caught.....and if you tell you will go to prison...there is no grey area!

  • So, this is the Bad Choice-Bad Choice ethical dilema?  In that case...I drive off.

  • I think either way i would feel like i was in prison. If tell i will rot in a cell. If i don't i will be in a internal hell guilt.

Its a tuff situation but i think i would drive off too.

    Damn we are bad huh?
  • My husband has me over here dying laughing... He said "Skirrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrch... I would hit somebody else trying to get my a$$ out of there grin grin grin grin

It's funny the way he said it(had to be there), but it's not funny :-\

  • Lips, your questions are always so tricky!!  ::) ::)
If a person was already died and there was no chance to help, save him/her I'd go away! But in the same time I believe in retribution! I'm not sure that I could live as it was before...Soon or later people get their just punishment! Prison might not be the most serious and sever punishment...what about remorse!?

  • Hi Phib,

I have to agree with you. The guilt and remorse to take someones life is far greater than a prison cell.

    Either way..........we lose.

    Lips
  • 13oclock,

No amount of remorse is going to soothe a grieving family. A punishment for their actions should definately be inforced.

Reflecting on our own internal struggle for causing the death of another person and choosing a course of action. It was an accident and it was not due to negligence....unfortunately in the eyes of the law it would be considered murder. That in itself is considered unfair.

As for the question about remorse...It think it completely depends on a person! There are people who don't even know what it is! But for others it can be even worse than prison...I couldn't live calmly, happily knowing that I killed someone by accident, "stole" someone's husband, child, sister....
  • Well lips the question is kind of off kilter. The cops would come, if you aren't drunk or high on drugs and calmly reported what occured, I cannot see manslaughter charges beuing pressed...

  • I couldn't live a lie.  I am the queen when it comes to being "ANTI-POLICE"  I would definitely call them in this case.  It really is just an accident.  It would be involuntary manslaughter at the most.  I keep thinking of Karma, if I did run something horrible would probably happen to someone I love.

  • I'd just have to go to the police. I couldn't just leave that person dead , right there in the street. It's a human being.
I would tell them my story, how this person jolted right out in front of me.They would  have to do a investigation and see that I was not drinking, or incapacitated in any way while I was driving.
Perhaps this person left a suicide note that would exonerate me of all my charges.

Regardless, if I was headed to jail, I would have to head to jail. I could not leave the scene of an accident and live with myself for the rest of my life. Guilt is a terrible thing. It can eat you alive.

                                                                      PMM

  • Marian,

One HUGE thank you for what you just said. That is exactly my point of the question and you got it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Of course in reality we would say...go to the police, explain it etc. The point of the question is basically one of two answers period!!!

    Thanks for understanding me......wink!!

  • I would like to say I would do the right thing but until it happens no one really knows what they would do! Prison is full of people who had things happen to them that they were not prepared for and wish they had done it differently! and then again also a lot of people who did nothing and the system needed a scape goat! You are guilty until proven innocent believe me!

  • I do not believe that I could go on. I would probably remain in the scene of the accident and inform the police. One can clear up nowadays already quite a lot. There are certainly means and ways to find out whether it was, perhaps, a suicide or not
