  • Hiya LCB'ers,

I have just recently discovered Casino cafes. I had no idea they became legal until a friend called me and said "hey did you see that new Casino Cafe around the corner from you"? I said what in the world are you talking about!

So naturally i had to check it and soon found out there are like three of them within a few mile radius of where i live. When i walked in i noticed there was only 5 Slots machines. A member of the staff explained to me that that by law they are only allowed to have 5 machines.

These are multiple game machines from big software giants like WMS, IGT and Aristocrat. They also include a wide selection of Video Poker games that feature a Wheel Spin after getting four of a kind 5 - K for an extra cash Bonus. The Wheel is also available on Slots that will randomly trigger when placing max bets.

I tried the Video Poker games and noticed that the Royal Flush normally worth 4,000 credits was only 2,000 credits because again by law the machines can only payout a $500 Jackpot at one time. The good news is a Straight Flush also pays out 2,000 credits as well as Aces and 2,3,4 of a kind with the kicker on Triple Bonus Play.

These cafes don't offer any rewards programs but do offer free food and non alcoholic drinks while you play.

I didn't think i would be too fond of them, but according to what i was told the machines are set a bit looser than big land based Casinos for a competitive edge. I did sit down and play for a bit and will be writing a Casino blog on my experience there.

Does anyone else have these Casino Cafes in their area, if so do you like them?

  • I never thought I'd see the day when that happened. It's pretty cool and I can't wait to hear about your experiences. I checked one out and played some IGT slots. I must say that they did pay much better than any of the IGT slots I played online. Some of the cafes are a little creepy. They're actually machines in the back of a bar which would make me a little nervous.

  • That's true froggy, while these Casino Cafes are actually quite nice inside some are placed in vulnerable areas and seems like it could be a open door to undesirable characters.

  • Are these in the US, Lips?  If so, I think they're regulated by state law.  Here in SC, they're illegal, but places still get busted here on a regular basis.  I never seem to find them BEFORE they bust them, tho.  sad

  • I have a few by me too! I was super excited, it hopefully means we are that much closer to legalizing online gambling! Well one could at least hope... smiley

Yes it is legal and regulated in Illinois. It is a recent law that what just passed. Not only do they offer gambling in these Casino Cafes but also in bars. They are opening up everywhere. I know of three particular Gaming companies one of which has already opened up 63 in the state of Illinois and by the end of the year plans on having a total of 300 open. That's just one company. It has exploded in my state and should be a matter of time before more states start offering legalized Casino Cafes.

I think you are right fried eggs. The states are getting more and more lenient on gambling. And it is definitely a matter of time as legislation realizes the revenue that can be made off gambling.

DAMN it!  Freaking "bible belt" South Carolina.  >:(

Video Poker used to be legal here in the late 90's/early 20's, but they decided it was too evil, so they made it illegal again.  Those are the machines they find all the time, too.  lol
  • Ya know lhasalover Illinois was a pretty straight laced state too. I was in shock when i discovered all these Casino cafes all over the place, even machines in the bars?? Illinois was one of the first states to disallow online Casino gambling and had such strict rules about how land based Casinos had to be on water before they would issue a license.

I think it will be a matter of time and South Carolina will legalize it too. I think it is a perfect outing for folks like you that are not feeling well enough to travel. Plus there is no crazy crowds or fighting for a parking spot.

Hang in there and let us know when they come to your area cuz it will!

  •             Here in Florida they had those "internet cafes"  which supposedly you would win  credit or merchandise or something and then cash it in for real money---Not sure exactly how it worked but there was a huge stink about 'em this last year or so and now they all went the way of the dinosaur.  It's really weird how the politician's seem to have this love-hate relationship with these places.  The big thing now is the tracks (dog and horse) have the poker rooms and that's a real big draw apparently.

  • I am still waiting Bongo for the race tracks in my state to allow Casinos. I think it would really help the racing industry that has fast become a dying sport. I would hate for that to happen and allowing a Casino at the track would definitely boost horse racing.

  • I live in a little Podunk town in Missouri and there is one slot machine at the local bar. It's a pretty old fruit style one. It takes cash, then pays you in tickets. The tickets only dispense in $5 increments and when you 'cash out' you give your tickets to the bartender. They put them in an envelope with your name on them and you pick up your money the next day. I've never even played it but now I want to go try it out haha!

  • OMG...when are they coming to California...I thought we were the liberal state with all the lunatics who want to gamble gamble gamble laugh_out_loud

  • Its interesting to see what states are going for it, seems to be the ones that are extra restricted.

  • wow thats crazu just today i was tell my son-in-law about being able to gamble in nj if ur in a part where it is legal to play on line...i told him i wouldnt be surprised if they dont put up gambling cafe.. where some one like me can go cross the water to  nj and gamble..

  • Here in Iowa, the actual lottery at one point set up slot machines in lots of places.  Like gas stations, grocery stores, bars, little mom and pop shops, you name it.  If you dispensed lottery tickets you could get a slot machine.
Now granted the main supplier was Bally, yet it was interesting.  Tickets for under $600 could be redeemed at the shop, tickets for over $600 had to be redeemed at the lottery HQ.  If I remember right the payout was horrible though, like 83% pay out.  It was no wonder why everyone wanted a part of the action.  At a $17 per $100 profit to the state that could have made some serious cash.
Anywho, eventually some folks got bent out of shape that the machines were too abundant for this state.  They were also too easily accessible to kids, teenagers, problem gamblers, and of the like as well, for lots of places rarely monitored who was playing there machines.  So eventually within the 6 months of them releasing the machines.  They ended up pulling them from every place.
The state ended up getting quite a few law suits from the places that supplied to machines to the shops that were counting on the money.  It was quite the mess.
Hopefully Illinois doesn't mess up as badly with there attempt at slot cafes.

  • Yes, i am also wondering how well these Casino Cafes will go over. Hopefully they will stay open and many of them are really nice. The only thing i was a bit surprised about is they do not offer any type of rewards program which makes me think the state won't allow it because it might aid in tempting problematic gamblers.

83% is a very low payout for sure. I have been told by brands companies in my state that they have a much higher payout percentage than land based Casinos as a way to compete and give them an edge. I have played at three different brand names and found the Slots were definitely looser, the Video Poker.......now that it is a different story! A lot of the Video Poker games have the Bonus wheel spin that is triggered when you get four of a kind on 5 - K. Getting a four of a kind is tough!

Coming soon LCB will be adding Casino Cafes by brand name and all their locations under Land Based Casino section.

  • I had an interesting conversation with the executive customer service host at the casino a couple weeks ago. I told her that these Casino cafes were now available all over the place and she was not too happy to say the least!

She tried her best to put them down by saying that it was not a good idea because it would escalate problem gamblers and they couldn't be nearly regulated like a full size land based casino.

I think she was basically defending her turf and wanted to discourage players from the competition. In fact i think the state keeps a pretty tight lid on these Casino cafes.

They don't offer perks like land based casinos but in the places i have played they definitely have a higher payout percentage and when a bonus is triggered it tends to pay more than usual.

What i am not so sure about is bars that have Slot machines. If it is some tiny dumpy bar are they really willing to payout big wins and how well are they regulated? I checked out a couple bars in my neighborhood and the software was totally unfamiliar to me. It sort of raised a red flag as to why top software were not in these places.

Would you trust playing Slots in a bar or local little store?

    Lips

  • Lips, I see today that froggy posted about casino cafes.  Are you guys playing in them regularly?  What do you think of them?  How is the payout?  Do you think it is better in the bars or in these cafes?  What about the casinos?  Payout better in cafes?  Do casino cafes give anything for your loyalty?

    Thanks,

  • Hi Medtrans,

I have played in almost every Casino Cafe near me. The Slots seem to be definitely looser. The Bonus rounds have much better payouts too overall. What i did notice is that Slots that are not typically known as being loose in the big Land Based Casinos are paying in these cafes. I am not sure if  it's a clever marketing strategy these software companies pick certain Slots that are not known to be payers, place them in these Cafes and ultimately drive the player to play them in Land Based Casinos and then come in for the kill and that's where you lose and they profit.

There are usually a couple Slots that offer the Big Wheel Bonus which is purely random but only when you place a max bet which is $1.50 to $2.00.

Now Video Poker offers a wide variety of games including those that have the Wheel Bonus that is triggered when there is any four of a kind 5-K. You can win up to $500 more on top of your winnings. They also have Video Poker without the Bonus Wheel which tend to pay four of a kind more often.

Because by law you can not win more than $500 on a single win the max for a Royal Flush is only $500 on quarters but........the advantage there is depending on what variation you choose a Straight Flush, 4 Aces and the kicker also pay out $500 with bigger payouts on four of a kinds that helps to offset the Royal Flush payout of $1,000 we are accustomed to.

I think these Casino Cafes are well regulated and i do trust them. What i am not so sure about is some of these bars and restaurants that have gaming. If it is a software i never heard of then i am even more leery.

An important tip if you should decide to give it a try is if you are lucky enough to hit $300 - $500 that's when you are best to cash-out. It's not like the big land based Casinos where you can win a ton of money. The most i ever won in accumulated wins was $700 but think its not all that common. Typically it is ideal to try your luck with like $100 max and call it a day.

I have to say i have won more times than i have lost. I played at three major brands including Stella's Place, Betty's and Dotty's. I like Stella's Place the best overall for great customer service and free drinks and food. Dotty's i liked the least mainly because when you cash-out your ticket you have to go to the front desk and get hand paid while the others have a machine to cash-out. I just personally don't like that someone standing at the front desk has to know your business of how much you won!

And on a final note one thing that is much different from land based casinos is once you cash out from a machine your ticket can not be used in another machine as it only accepts real cash requiring you to cash out at the ATM/Cash-out machine.

For a bit of fun don't take a serious bankroll with you and chances are you might be able to make somewhat of a profit.

  • Sorry just reread your post and forgot to mention loyalty. No these cafes do not offer a loyalty program whatsoever. I think, but don't know for certain state law won't allow it because it could escalate problematic gamblers. However they are very generous on offering free non-alcoholic drinks and free food. Sometimes they will run a fish bowl type drawing to win cash prizes but i haven't seen anything else.

  • Thanks for the info.  I am shocked that Harrah's and other casinos in Illinois wouldn't be against these.  They must not have won in the lobbying.  smiley

Don't think we will ever get them in Wisconsin.  They have been trying to get a casino in Kenosha for years, but the other Indian casinos here are fighting it hard and seem to be winning in delaying it.  Our governor has the final say I guess.  All casinos in Wisc. are run by Indians.

Most of our bars here have 5 gambling machines so I guess the cafes are about the same.  Although the cafes are legal!  Machines in bars are legal, but are not supposed to pay out (entertainment only).  Like anyone would put money in and play for entertainment, but the state does get their share on them so they look the other way.

    Very interesting.

  • If other casino groups did lobby this it is surprising they have not won. At the same time due to the limit of machines and the amount that can be won on a single win they really shouldn't feel so threatened. These Casino cafes are small potatoes in comparison to the big land based Casinos. Although i guess it still takes away a tiny percentage of business from them, after all i opted to go there instead and they lost my business on those days.

I think it is a matter of time as more and more states allow it and  brings in revenue. But it sounds like Wisconsin might be one of the last considering they only allow Indian run Casinos.

But you do have Ho Chunk Casinos popping up all over the place! Just ran into one close to the Illinois border a couple weeks ago. I was surprised that it was alcohol free though.

  • Lips I play the one slot at my tiny little hole in the wall bar when I'm drunk haha! I've seen people win, not too much maybe like $200 at a time and they have always paid but I think max bet is only thirty cents.

  • I have yet to be at one of the places by me, rather just go to the casino. Though I'm always up for anything new, have to check one out.

  • Fried Eggs, you would be surprised!!!!  Next time you've at a dive bar, just check for little side rooms or ask the bartender if they have any 'games' in the building.

  • See lips, I'm not so sure Iowa will be getting back in the game after they burned so many vendors before.
Hell there having a hard time passing online poker thru our governor along with loosening up the self ban bill.
See, I know Iowa loves it's land based casinos, yet I get the feeling anything that brings money "closer" to home.  Is being fought for and hard.  Plus our governor doesn't seem to be a big fan of expanding on gambling anyways.

  • I understand cheetah and i once came from the same thought process as you with Illinois. They have been so anti-gambling for so long i thought we would never see land based casinos here must less Casino cafes.

The last land based Casino to open around the Chicagoland area took over ten years to get approved. Developers bought the property, broke ground and began to build only to be left idle for a number of years because the local government would not approve it.

I think you will see Casino Cafes and states like ours are the guinea pigs. Once they see the type of revenue it can bring in the money will pop in their eyes...........i hope at least.

Is it something you are for or against in your state?

  • Fried Eggs, you would be surprised!!!!  Next time you've at a dive bar, just check for little side rooms or ask the bartender if they have any 'games' in the building.

That is so very true! My only concern is how legit are these machines and the owners that have them? Like online rogue casinos there are less than reputable places. You have seen people win and that is a good sign even though its not much.

I guess i am leery because where i live it has gone on way before it was legal and machines were rigged not to pay and there were "plants" that would play to give the impression they do pay up.

Now that it is legal i am hoping they are more on the up and up!

  • I'm for the gambling cafe's if they actually take their job as offering the machines seriously.  Like IDing questionable patrons, offering an internal self exclusion type of ordeal, and offer some sort of restraints available.
Otherwise if they open up and it's a free for all who can on the machines, who can cash out, and what not I'm not for it.
I really think they have a place in our state besides these "entertainment" value machines.
Yet I think before Bally and IGT open there doors to state cafe's.  I think they'll want some hard core cash from the lottery to boot from there experiment with lottery slot machines before.  Sp then unless if the state offers some sort of compensation for offering these machines for a short period and then having the law reversed.  That would only allow for WMS to offer games really.  Which I love, but I'm not sure patrons would be a huge fan of being only allowed to play one machine type.

  • I worry about some of those machines I've seen in bars too. They seem a little shady and usually offer games I've never seen before.

  • Cheetah - in the cafes here they do offer multiple software including WMS, IGT, Ballys, Speilo and Game King for Video Poker. So even though there are only 5 machines there is a lot of variety.

I agree they don't seem to be so quick to ID people that walk in. For the most part some of the employees don't know a single thing about gambling and don't have the etiquette needed. I don't exactly like employees standing over me or watching from behind the bar every play i make. Or asking players every 15 minutes if they are winning or as they leave ask if they won or lost.

Another thing i don't think is cool is allowing people to wait for an open machine as they sit or stand behind players. These places have plenty of room and there are tables on the other side where they should wait!

  • To be honest its quite disgusting and things like this are causing huge gambling problems. While casino style cafe's do sound bad, I find that here in the UK it is an industry with no morals or cares.

On the TV we have bingo ads that are on during the day constantly. Night time it's casino adverts and when theres a football game on theres non stop betting tv ads.

Our equivalent of casino cafe's would be the bookmakers or arcade.

Nearly every town has at least 1 18+ arcade. The payout percentage on the machines there are often so crappy that you have no chance of winning. Machines in our local arcade have payout %'s as low as 70%. Plus they are very sneaky... Many are located next to pawn shops or have cash machines inside which encourage irresponsible gambling.

In seaside towns there are arcades with £5 jackpot fruit machines which allow kids to gamble on them. Crazy eh? Kids as young as 6 or 7 can play on a fruit machine and lose a fair bit of cash.
