  • The Treatment at Harrah’s Casino – Council Bluffs

You can’t beat the Total Rewards program through Caesars Entertainment Casinos, especially the Free trips!

I could never get passed the Diamond Card level (level 2 out of three) but on the other hand my mom was a 7 Stars member, the highest and most elite level. She received in the mail a free flight and room package for two to Harrah’s Council Bluffs Iowa.

Of course I was her gambling partner in crime and went with her. It has to be one of the most memorable trips I ever had with her and I know it was her favorite.

When we arrived at the airport there was a limo waiting for us and we felt like two big hot shots…lol! When we got to Harrah’s we were not too impressed as far as the ambience but the staff must have been given the heads up on our arrival because they all came up to us at one point or another welcoming us and made us felt right at home. It is a Riverboat Casino with multiple floors and without either one of us having much luck we decided to roam over to Horseshoe Casino the next day which was beautiful by comparison.

I played one cent 100 lines Video Poker and it was the first time I had ever seen one at that coin denomination. It was also the first and only time I got dealt four aces with the kicker for 100 hands too and snapped up $500!  Unfortunately it was the only thing I snapped up during our three day stay.

The Horseshoe management tracked my mom down by her player’s card she had in the machine and offered her a $100 to have a steak dinner at Jack Binion’s Steakhouse. The restaurant was absolute gorgeous with red velvet half circle cushy booths and the steaks were to die for.

If it was not for bad luck we would have no kind of luck at all. We both did not fair too well at all. On our last day the limo driver took us back to the airport. Our bad luck continued with a plane delay. The airline suggested passengers re-book on another flight the next day after waiting nearly three hours.

This got our wheels turning whether we should go back to the Casino and maybe turn our luck around and stay one more day. We weren’t sure if we could even get a room for another night but after calling not only would we get a free room but the limo driver was back on his way to pick us up!

We were like to school kids all excited as we got out of the limo and back into Harrah’s Casino. Did we turn our luck around? Not a single lick of luck!

I don’t think either one of us would have ever imagined that Council Bluffs would be one of our favorite gambling excursions but with such star VIP treatment……..it really was!
  • The Barbecue Bash....

Have you ever gone to the Casino for great promotional giveaways and walked out thinking i more than paid for that Freebie!

Its like when i get Free buffets every month or access to the VIP lounge where there is free food and i look around and say to myself i have paid for everyone here tonight to enjoy this in my accumulated losses! Or when there is a free gift giveaway and i walk out with a toaster oven and think i could of bought 100 of these for what i lost today!

Sunday there was a BBQ party for invitation only players at Rivers Casino. I got the mailer to call and reserve a spot for me and a guest because there was only a 200 max reservation, but thought nah i ain't going to go.

It didn't take much to coax me into going when the executive Casino host called me and asked if i reserved my spot. I told her no and she said i will book that for you right now because it will fill up fast.

I have to admit it was one of the best private parties Rivers Casino ever had. It was held in the Cube lounge with doors that opened up to the patio where chefs were preparing steak on the grill along with other sides and of course my fav desserts!

Round tables with white table cloths and a gorgeous fresh flower arrangement was on every table as well as throughout the whole bar.

A live band wailed an all American country music and they were actually pretty good. The stage was lined up with 10 mini Weber grills and under each lid was a cash prize totally $20,000. 10 players were called out of the drum of tickets and guaranteed cash with one grill holding $10,000, one holding $5,000 and $1,000 etc.

I was naturally at the Video Poker machines at this point when they finally announced the winners. I stopped took a deep breath and said to myself puhhhleeezzzzz call my name as i stopped in the middle of my drawn Super Triple Play Poker hand!

Unfortunately it didn't happen and as i walked past the Cube to leave i saw that innocent looking sweet executive Casino host and for that moment didn't like her! Why? Because i lost and had one of the moments where i thought...........i paid for half these people to eat tonite!

  • They should have called it Lips' BBQ Bash laugh_out_loud. That slot host isn't so sweet looking anyway!

  • Sorry you didn't win anything lips.  Happens to me too.  They have VIP stuff all the time here, but I never win anything.

One time, though, I went to the casino on a Monday night.  I had no idea they were doing hourly drawings for all players that were present.  (They always seem to be doing some kind of drawings.)  So I was playing my usual video poker and ran out of money.  Was standing in line at the cashier to cash a check and they called my name.  I had no idea what I won until I went to the booth.  I got $500.  It was a very nice surprise.

They also give away stuff like recently it was a juicer, hand blender, waffle maker, and crock pot.  They are given on different days of course.  Just got the crock pot recently.  Told my friend, "It only cost me $400."  smiley

I know it's crazy.  I have a lot of stuff I have received that I haven't even opened the boxes.  Things I would never buy for myself to use at home!  I am thinking of getting them all together and putting them on ebay.

  • My Trip to Atlantic City………

I went to Atlantic City with two friends and we stayed at Harrah’s Casino. When we arrived our room was not ready so we left our bags at the Bell Captain, wished each other luck as they headed to the Roulette table and I was in hot pursuit for Video Poker!

Because I was going to be there for 4 days I knew I had to stay away from the quarter poker machines and find the nickel and dime machines to conserve my bankroll.

It didn’t take me long to find a carousel of Double Super Times Poker. I played dimes ten lines, threw in $40 bucks and nothing popped. I said ok one more $20 and I am going to move on. I was so glad I did because I hit the Royal Flush within the first 20 minutes of being there and ended up cashing out a $700 voucher.

I was off to a great start and roamed the Casino floor hoping and praying there was an actual Video Poker section and they were not just sprinkled here and there throughout the Casino. Then like seeing a mirage, I found paradise………row after row of Video Poker machines!

I played for maybe 30 minutes with a little luck here and there when my friends came to get me and said our room was ready and need to hit pool.

Through the entire trip not a single time did I have to go find them, they had to track me down and it was like they had to pry me with a crow bar to pull me away……lmao!

It was definitely a Royal Flush kinda of trip because every single day I hit one, I kid you not! The nickel and dime poker machines were loose!

The next morn I played Ultimate 4 of a Kind with the Bonus – 5 lines. I got four aces with the kicker and 4 aces on three other lines which gave me 12 Bonus picks with more cash on each box and won $450 big ones! But ended up giving it all back later that afternoon.

We took the Jitney that night to Revel Casino located on the Boardwalk and after putting in $20 in Video Poker walked out with $300. Came back to Harrah’s and stayed up until 4:30 in the morning and was wayyyyy down. The $700 I won there was nearly gone when lo and behold I hit a Royal Flush, 4 Aces with the kicker and cashed out exactly the $700 I lost.

On day three we went back to the Boardwalk and played in all the Casinos along the way. By this time I had the routine down pat and instead of roaming the Casino floor for a half hour to find Video Poker I asked the security guard to lead the way!

We got back to Harrah’s around 1am and of course I wasn’t ready to go to bed and I am glad I didn’t because I land yet another Royal Flush but I will still way down because the Boardwalk did me in.

On our last day we had to catch the shuttle back to the airport by 2:30. After getting to bed at 3:30am I was up by 8:00am, grabbed my coffee and played some more with no luck at this point I had to pull money out of the ATM because I had lost what I won and what I brought. My friends finally woke up, knew where to find me and we had breakfast, checked out of our room with just an hour or so to spare.

Still down on my luck, my friends got our luggage and said they would meet me over at the shuttle outside with only 15 more minutes more for me to play. I called on every Poker God in the universe to let me get at least 4 aces with the kicker or a Royal before I had to leave.

OMG…………omg then it happened……..what every Video Poker player dreams about! I was playing ten line nickels and got not one but TWO Royal Flushes in the same hand! Two hands later I got my four Aces with the kicker. I promptly cashed out $500 with only two minutes to spare to get on shuttle!

Now it sounds like I did well with all those Royal Flushes and Aces with kickers. In one way I did because I lost what I came with, only made one ATM withdrawal and recouped right back on the last day.

When I consider how much time I spent gambling I was only down $1,200 my entire stay of non-stop gambling and that included drinks and food!

But like a fool I stayed up too late, played too long and gave it all back and then some. But one thing is for sure I had a blast doing it!

There are sooo much more to tell about Atlantic City that I can’t write it all here so I will make a thread for it!

  • After her friend left us my wife and I were on our own for the last few days of the holiday.

We wanted to see Venice, which was only a half hour away on the train. So we took the train into the great old city to see the architecture, artwork, gondolas and waterways.

A trip to the casino, located in an ancient Venetian building in the heart of the city, was also on my agenda.

    http://www.casinovenezia.it/it

Venice was hot that July day in 07, and packed with tourists and a smattering of locals. Some of the locals didn't seem to like the tourists crowding their streets. You could tell a local by their purposeful stride as they overtook and passed you on the street. And then of course a few had glanced back as they strode past with that special contempt some locals can have for tourists.

There were some colorful local characters as well, like the very old man in an old fashioned suit. He walked slowly with a diamond studded walking stick and a bowler hat. Their were little ice cream shops on nearly every block with delicious Italian gelatto on offer. And the button down little coffee shops, that serve the most potent espresso one can imagine. Somehow, the espresso in Italy seemed more decaffeinated than the same concoction, which I have bought at starbucks in the US and at Baresso here in Denmark. I thought it had an amphetamine-like kick, really.

Americans were everywhere. Standing near the famous bridge of sighs, one young, teenaged American girl seemed very disconsolate with her life. Her father vocalized his disbelief at her unhappiness; "this is Venice; the trip of a lifetime."  he exclaimed.

I thought he didn't seem to get his daughter. It was kind of sad.

Their was a group of teenaged American boys who were making crude comments about the city and it's inhabitants; and some of the things they saw: such as the butcher shop(s) which (dealt exclusively in) sold horse meat, exclusively horse meat.

    https://www.pinterest.com/pin/426856870903839876/

The wife and I were exhausted; steamy and sweaty, after walking through the nearly impenetrable crowd on one of the city's most famous routes. I was dying for a drink, so we went into a small bar; only to balk at the minimum price of ten euro per cocktail.

We were very cost conscious on that trip. Our money was running out. We had two more days in Italy, but we still didn't want to take cash from the ATM if we could help it.

The proprietor of the bar was annoying me. The bar was a hole in the wall; with two or three small tables and the narrow space where he stood behind the bar. I was hot and tired and couldn't afford the sweet, cold alcohol I lusted after. And to make things worse the owner began slamming glasses was done washing and drying--down loudly against the counter a foot and a half from my ears.

Just then a group of American tourists, all women, came into the very tiny bar; sat at the table a few inches from ours; and--after chatting awhile about their experience that day seeing the sights--began perusing the drinks menu. There were three very young women, no older than seventeen or eighteen and two older; who seemed to be the groups mentors', or possibly a parent and grandparent. One of the older women was in her forties, while the other was on the cusp of being elderly, perhaps in her late fifties to mid-sixties.

We listened to their conversation. They were so close I had to consciously avoid rubbing elbows with the next oldest seated right next to me.

We chatted in Danish a bit about whether to order a drink or just get a small iced coffee.

I had finally become somewhat fluent in Danish, but was, and still am, always striving to improve my Danish language skills.

Only six million of the world's inhabitants use Danish on a daily basis.  Even whilst sitting toe-to-toe with a group of non-Danish speakers; Danes, when traveling abroad, can converse, while the non-Danes who surround them haven't a clue.

My wife was observing the women and she said to me in Danish with a little laugh, "the oldest one has just experienced the cocktail prices,"

" experienced the prices" I replied, confused; "can you say it like that in Danish, '"to experience the prices,'" I asked a bit baffled.

"Yes" she said back, distracted, "be quiet, I want to hear what she says"

I shut up, watched and listened. The old lady was peering skeptically, even a bit suspiciously through her bifocals at the drinks menu. "Look at these prices she said," with a bit of dawning wonder in her tone.

The next eldest on my right replied,

    "how much do they cost"

"at least ten for the cheapest" said the old lady.

The youngsters looked timid and insecure under the authority of their leader.

The forty something lady next to me looked with more focus at the large, plastic covered card in her hands.

Hot, tired, fed up an irritated with the obnoxious bartender on my left; I leaned slightly towards the middle aged woman----and said (in English) in my best loud, working class Boston accent:

"Welcome to the tourist trap, where they got you goooood, they got you reeeeeel goooood."

The women were all staring intently at me...the middle aged one looked confused, the leader looked suddenly very hostile towards the menu and she nearly shouted: "I'm not paying ten bucks for a drink!"

Then we all rose from our chairs and exited.

The Italian owner looked dumbfounded. All his customers, who had just been about to order, abruptly and angrily harummphed, and hoofed their way out the door  onto the hot street.

We continued on our way to the Piazzo San Marco, (St. Mark's Square) finding something cheaper and more convenient to quench our thirst along the way.

After we had ambled through the square we retraced our route back out of the city towards the railway station. We were almost out of cash (euros) and my wife was reluctant to make a withdrawal, but realized it was unavoidable.

We were resting in a quiet place a bit away from the crowds and close to the casino. I asked if I could take twenty euros and go in and try my luck. She wasn't enthusiastic about the idea, but agree to wait if it wouldn't be too long.

"It will be over fast with only twenty euros to bet" I said. "One way or the other. Maybe I'll come back with a roll of cash!"

"Yeah Yeah," she replied.  "I'll be waiting out here. "

I was determined that if I won at all in there; that I would not lose it again, snatch defeat from the jaws of victory, and come back with nothing save for stories of how I won and lost again.

There was a large female security guard standing at the door. She was alert and serious, but seemed to be enjoying the sun. I was very nervous about the language barrier. Most Italians, I had quickly learned speak only Italian, and it had been our experience that those who could manage a bit of English did so rather poorly.

I saw my own reflection in the guard's sunglasses as I approached her. She looked down at me cooly.

"hi, do you speak English," I asked tenatively.

    "A little" she replied.

    I braced myself.

"What do I need to do to play in the casino?" I asked. "Can I play here?, I'm a tourist."

She answered in fluent English, with an American accent that sounded from somewhere around New Jersey or New York. She quickly described the registration procedure and casino dress code and also told me that new players got a free twenty euro to play on blackjack or on the slot machines.

I didn't have the blazer they required, but she told me that was no problem, I could rent one with a fifty five cash euro deposit.

I went back and told the wife--who was manging our dwindling euros--that I needed fifty five euros to rent a jacket, but that it was just a security deposit, which I would get back on my exit from the casino.

"Don't worry" I said, "I won't gamble with the 55, it will be at the door when I give up the jacket on my way out...and you aren't allowed inside without it on...so"

She forked over the bills with a look of nervous exhaustion on her face.

"We have to withdraw some more money soon" she said.

I took the cash and proceeded into the casino. I passed through the sunlit lobby into a large dressing room attended by a young Italian women in formal dress. She helped me size a jacket and then I got my registration in order and took the twenty euro chip up to the tables.

The casino was in a somewhat ancient building in Venice. After going through registration and the dressing room; I was directed up a narrow winding stairwell, which at the top ended at an entrance decked with heavy red drapes. I had to part these drapes, and when they fell back again, I was confronted with the gaming tables.

The place really had a gambling den in the old world kind of feel. There were huge windows behind the blackjack tables on my left, which looked out over, the light, almost turquoise blue water of the harbor and all the iconic architecture of Venice. It was stunningly beautiful on that hot and sunny July day.

But the sweating crowds around the roulette tables and the tense players at the blackjack tables contrasted with that serene, sunny  and splendid Venetian harbor backdrop.  The roulette table was simply mobbed. A formally attired young croupier spun the wheel while the pit boss looked on, nodding at him once in a while.

Aware that my wife was tired, probably hungry and not so happy about possibly waiting for more than a short time outside, I thought that a quick twenty euro bet on roulette would either score me some much needed cash or get me out the door really fast.

I did my best to find a spot around the crowded table from which I could buy some chips from the croupier. It was so crowded that I could only manage to almost have enough room close to the wheel itself, by the lower numbers on the green felt. I saw that the betting limits were displayed by a small white sign on the table.

The minimum bet was one euro and the maximum was a thousand. I caught the croupier's eye and asked for twenty one euro chips which I planned to spread around the table.  I tried to hand him my house gift chip, but, in the exitement of entering this crowded and sweaty den of iniquity, I had forgotten that the chip had to be used on blackjack. He told me in English that the minimum bet was raised to ten euros, because the table was so crowded.

Okay I thought and asked for two ten euro chips, which I made two corner bets with the two ten euro chips, covering the 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5, this bet covered the one and two twice with a twenty euro bet in total on each. I really needed a one or a two, but that was a long shot.

The wheel spun and I had about the best vantage point for watching the little white ball, and as the wheel revolved it began to ricochet and bounce over the numbers. I stood mesmerized, thinking:

"Okay after I lose this bet, I'll just place two minimum ten dollar bets over at the blackjack table" where I could see there was still space.

But the ball took a final bounce and rested snugly and securely over the black number two!

    Wow!

Only one other player in that sweaty mob surrounding the table had won. People in the crowd looked over too me with jealousy and admiration. The croupier pushed a stack of chips at me and then I asked where the cashier was.

"Cash" he said "just to your right, there" He pointed to another set of heavy red drapes hanging over an a white arched entrance. I grabbed my chips, walked a few steps, parted the drapes and stood in a long narrow closet. There were three cashier windows which had brass bars over them and an open space at the bottom to slide your chips through to the cashier. The fat and sweaty cashier behind the bars briskly counted out the crisp new twenty euro notes and threw them down towards me.

    One hundred and eighty euro.

I went back to the gaming area and sat down with my free twenty dollar chip and bet it three times in a row before losing it. Another sixty euro shot from under the bars of the cashier's window out to my hot sweaty hand.

My wife's only comment when I emerged from the casino, ten minutes after entering, flush with cash. was: "That was so fast! Now I see the attraction gambling has for you."

  • I was confused at first feeling it was more of a critique on Americans by observation than a Casino blog. Loving horses the way i do.............i would have been jolted to see that butcher shop!

I see you wrote about your experience in 2007? Have you been back since?

  • No, not trying to be too critical of Americans, I wrote it in the last month from memory, and it is just what I remember most from my observations that day, there were also nice people from America...some Italian Americans later that day in a restaurant... teased my in a very friendly way for trying to order our food in my horrible Italian...

I think there might be quite a few Italian Americans living and working in Italy...A friend told me they got double citizenship rights first in the country's with the three I's Italy, Israel and Ireland...I don't know if he is right, but I met the guard at the casino entrance who sounded like a new yorker, and the restaurant owners/workers and some of their customers who sounded very American...but yeah it doesn't feel right about the horse meat...more that Italians eat it reguarly like that, than that some American teenagers on a trip to Venice were being a bit obnoxious...

Haven't been back since...I hope you liked the part that ended on the casino experience...you can cut it if you like if you think it isn't relevant at the begining.

  • Yes very much enjoyed and would not dream of cutting  wink

  • This is a 3 handed game with coin values at .05, .10 and .25. Randomly a pair of dice will roll across your screen either before your hand is dealt, on the draw or both. Add the total number on both dice and it reveals the multiplier up to 12 times. Grand Victoria Casino and Resort

The Aransas Queen also features two fully-stocked bars, and both indoor and above-deck dining and lounge areas for your enjoyment.

  • I like that combination, not only is it on the ocean for a nice cruise but we can get in a wee bit of gambling along the adventure!

  • I have never been to Miami, so when me and a few friends planned a surprise bachelorette party getaway for the bride-to-be, we all agreed that would be an awesome spot. Casino Miami

  • For me personally I like Foxwoods in Connecticut or for something a little bit closer to home I really enjoy twin River in  Lincoln Rhode Island. I've had decent ones and plenty of decent both of these casinos and I recommend both of them to either. Video poker at Foxwoods tends to be a bit more difficult, a.k.a. harsher treatment for mistakes and video poker , but  When you win you win

  • After having an awesome dinner including a wedge salad with blue cheese and filet mignon sliders gratis of the house I began my journey onto the Casino floor. Rivers Casino
  • Rivers Casino tempts me once again when my VIP host gives me a jingle on the telephone. Apparently they are pretty pleased with my play time on China Mystery Slot too cuz Ms. Judy makes me an offer I can’t refuse. Rivers Casino

  • Talk to some of my friends and they would say I was just acting like a spoiled brat because I am so use to winning more often than the average bear. Although this may be true it doesn’t mean I don’t have the right to pout does it? Four Winds Casino Resort

  • I guess this ended my losing streak and that night it was lobster for me and steak for froggy.

The distraction helped to ease some of my pain as I fought hard to fight back the tears throughout my stay in Laughlin. Harrah's Laughlin Casino Hotel

  • A new puppy will certainly help soothe a broken heart while grieving over the loss of my lady Hazel. I purchased a Victorian Bulldog at just 8 weeks old and she is a crazy, adorable one for sure! When I entered, the pet store the last thing on my mind was to buy this breed. But you know how it goes, you see a butterball bundle in a cage looking at you with those sad eyes and your heart melts. Grand Victoria Riverboat Casino Review

  • In my neck of the woods the casino cafés are popping up like dandelions with a new one opening all the time. I am not sure if that is good or bad despite the fact I enjoy the convenience, I find myself gambling more often than I normally would. There are several I can literally get to in a short walk, now for someone like me that can be dangerous. Dotty's Casino Review

  • Is it true that absence makes the heart grow fonder? It could very well be the premise of Lion Festival slot. The king of the jungle is nowhere to be found on this Konami one armed bandit but I love him all the same! Rivers Casino Review

  • Hi fried-eggs, why don"t you try at Golden Nugget Casino Hotel?

  • Four Winds, in New Buffalo Michigan is a great one if your ever in the US
