Albania is located in south-east Europe. It borders the Adriatic Sea to the west, the Ionian Sea to the south-west, Greece to the south-east, Macedonia to the east, Kosovo to the north-east and Montenegro to the north and north-west.
For a long time, Albania allowed foreign operators to offer their games inside their country. Once they saw the level of funds that were leaving the country, they made a strong effort to stop these activities. They do not issue their own licenses, and they're not likely to try to do so anytime soon. Because they have a very poor economic situation, Albania has decided to try to stop all forms of online gambling.
They're achieving this by blocking foreign sites and putting penalties in place for players who are found to get in on the action. This combination seems to be working well to achieve their aim since online gambling is at an all-time low in this particular country.
No licensing process exists in Albania at this time. They do have land-based casinos, but extensive reform has pushed these out of the cities, and there are very atypical laws in place that allow people to be banned from these establishments if family members request it. It's not likely that they will add licensing for online gambling at any point in the near future since they are trying to limit gambling as much as reasonably possible in a, perhaps misguided, attempt to help their economy. It would probably be more effective to regulate the industry and use the revenues to build infrastructure.
You aren't going to find any kind of player protection for online gambling in this country. Albania is all about providing as much discouragement as possible for online gambling. Along these lines, there are fines and different punishments in place if you are found to be gambling on the Internet. What's more is that if your site is blocked while you have funds in an account, you won't be able to retrieve your funds. Overall, the risk set up by the measures Albania is taking creates a situation where it's not really worth it to try to gamble online from this country for the time being.
