Algeria is a red-level online gambling jurisdiction since every form of online gambling is illegal in the country.

Algeria is located near the north-west tip of Africa. It borders Tunisia to the north-east, Libya to the east, Niger and Mali to the south, Mauritania to the south-west, and Morocco to the west. It also borders the Mediterranean Sea to the north.

In the country of Algeria, all forms of gambling are illegal, and this includes online gambling. There are no exceptions or exemptions to this law, and it's centered around religious reasons. When more than 98 percent of a country has a shared religion, and the religion dictates that no forms of gambling are acceptable, then it's not hard to understand why there is a complete and total ban on it.

Something that makes Algeria atypical when compared to other countries that ban online gambling is that they have a history that shows they will actively censor the Internet. It's unclear whether online gambling sites have been blocked in this way, but a precedent for it has already been set, and since they have laws that criminalize getting around these blocks, there's not a simple loophole like some might think.

No licensing process for online gambling sites exists in Algeria. It's also important to realize that there most likely will never be a licensing process in this country because of its religious makeup, at least in the next several decades. While they are somewhat progressive in some areas compared to other countries that are so centered around a single religion, gambling is not one of those areas. All forms of operating a gambling business are explicitly illegal, and there have been no measures to date to try to change this on any level.

Player Protection

No player protection exists in Algeria for online gambling. In fact, it's much more the opposite. There are a lot of measures in place to prevent online gambling and to punish those who do it. However, it's unclear if there have been any arrests, charges or prosecutions regarding gambling on the Internet. This isn't surprising since it's historically difficult to justify the use of resources in policing this sort of thing. Players are advised to play at their own risk if they're a citizen of Algeria or if they are just visiting because the penalties are very harsh.
