Bahrain is a red-level online gambling jurisdiction, and they have one of the strongest levels of Internet censorship for gambling in the world.
Bahrain is a small, wealthy island nation off of the eastern coast of Saudi Arabia. It's surrounded by the Persian Gulf and is connected to Saudi Arabia via bridges. It's located several miles north-west of Qatar and east of Saudi Arabia.
Bahrain is another Middle Eastern country that is dominated by Sharia law, and as such, all forms of gambling are illegal. This includes gambling online. What really stands out about Bahrain is that their citizens tend to have a very high level of wealth with an average income in the neighborhood of $50,000 a year. This would indicate a large demand for the ability to gamble.
However, the situation is more complicated than that because Bahrain has an extremely in-depth Internet censorship program. They block all gambling-related websites at the ISP level, and this prevents any real type of underground market or foreign access from happening. It's unclear what the penalties would be for players who would access foreign sites using a VPN since the population is so small and it's not addressed specifically in their laws.
Bahrain is interesting is that they're relatively progressive, though they're still governed by Sharia Law. This would indicate that they have a slightly higher chance of loosening laws surrounding gambling and regulating the online gambling industry before many of the other countries in the region. Whether or not that will happen inside of the next decade, however, is anyone's guess.
With that having been said, their high level of wealth per capita and their relatively progressive behavior could get things going quickly if there was ever a political champion to come forward with the cause. On the other hand, their high level of wealth could backfire and eliminate the need for the state to build extra revenues through regulating the industry since they take enough in taxes as it is.
There aren't really any type of player protections for any type of gambling in Bahrain. Those who try to gamble online through VPNs and other types of technology do so at their own risk, and we do not recommend that type of behavior since it's unclear what the penalties could be if you were caught.
