Cyprus is a yellow-level online gambling jurisdiction where some gambling is legal and other types are illegal.

Cyprus is an island located on the east end of the Mediterranean Sea. It's located about 100 miles west of Syria and about 125 miles north-west of Lebanon. It's also about 75 miles south of Turkey.

Since 2012, Cyprus has had a very strict hold on online gambling. Online lottery tickets are allowed, and fixed-odds sports betting is also allowed on the Internet. However, no other forms of online gambling are allowed, and they are very aggressive about blocking foreign sites at the ISP level. It's an interesting policy towards online gambling that isn't repeated in many parts of the world at all.

There is some hope that they might add other games in the future based on the revenue that they're building for the government. However, that most likely will not come any time soon, and we do not recommend banking on changes in the Cypriot Betting Act of 2012 (the main law for online gambling in the country) to come any time in the next few years.

To be licensed to offer sports betting in the country, you have to acquire an online gambling license. Outside companies aren't allowed to run online lotteries since the online lottery is state-operated. Fixed-odds betting is all that's allowed for sports betting, and the licensees understand that. Along these lines, they're rather limited in what they can offer, and this has spurred problems with a number of established online sports betting sites that were previously operating in the country prior to 2012.

The standards that are used for when the National Betting Authority awards licenses aren't widely available.

Player Protections

It's not clear what level of player protections exist for regulated lottery play and sports betting in Cyprus. However, it is clear that they're very aggressive about blocking unlicensed sites, and they have a few hundreds sites that are actively maintained on an ISP blacklist. Along these lines, they have also made it explicitly illegal to play with other types of online gambling than what's regulated in the country. It's unclear if they are as aggressive with pursuing players who do gamble with unblocked and unlicensed sites, so players will do so at their own risk.
