The Gambia is a white-level online gambling jurisdiction because of a complex legal situation that is completely unclear.

The Gambia is a narrow country on the western coast of the southern tip of Africa. It is completely surrounded by Senegal in all directions except to the west where it borders the Atlantic Ocean.

To say that online gambling law is complicated in the Gambia could be a strong candidate for understatement of the year. There are several competing initiatives that make it unclear as to whether online gambling is legal or not. The country is about 95 percent Muslim, and Islam is particularly against gambling. No law exists that bans online gambling. However, the president has come out in early 2015 proclaiming that all gambling in the Gambia is illegal. Whether he has legal basis to do this is also unclear, and many lawyers from the country have stated that the president does not have this power.

To make things even more complicated, gambling as a whole is banned except for government-sponsored games. Again, it's not clear if this applies to online gambling because they do have one land-based casino marketed primarily to tourists and a national lottery.

No licensing process for any type of online gambling exists in the Gambia. Additionally, there is no formal licensing process for land-based establishments either. With the hard anti-gambling stance that government officials have taken fairly recently, it's unlikely that there will be any sort of online gambling licensing happening in the Gambia for a very long time. The one land-based casino that operates does so with government permission, and the national lottery is used to raise funds for community projects, but neither of these have a traditional license to operate as opposed to express government permission.

Player Protections

Players aren't protected in any real way by the government when it comes to online gambling. With that having been said, there are no laws banning online gambling explicitly. However, players should gamble on the Internet at their own risk since it's unclear if existing laws about land-based establishments cover Internet play as well. To mitigate the risk associated with playing from a jurisdiction like this, players who are going to play should make sure to only use credible payment methods and online casinos that have solid reputations.
