Ghana is located on the southern coast of Northern Africa. It borders the Ivory Coast to the west, Burkina Faso to the north and Togo to the east. It also borders the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Guinea to the south.
There are no laws regarding online gambling in Ghana. However, they do have very strict laws regulating the land-based industry dating back to the 1960s and 1970s, and virtually every type of gambling is available legally through this regulatory framework. When you add this to the fact that Internet usage has increased at a high rate each year for the past several years in this country, it's essentially the perfect storm of the will to regulate and the future need to do so. Along these lines, we expect that they will regulate the online industry sooner rather than later, but nothing is for certain.
Ghana doesn't have a licensing process for online gambling specifically. However, some companies with licenses for land-based gambling have been starting to offer online services. This includes poker, casino games, sports betting and other forms of gambling. It's unclear whether their current licensing process allows them to do this or if they are acting against the law. In any event, it's a gray area for the time being because their laws on gambling were devised decades before the Internet was invented.
Since there are no licensing processes available for any type of online gambling in Ghana, it's likely that there are no forms of player protection here. However, with some companies licensed for land-based gambling offering online games, it's possible that their land-based licenses would protect players who gamble online with these games specifically. Outside of that, there are clearly no protections for players, and players should mitigate this risk by sticking with foreign sites who have proven themselves with a strong reputation.
It's important to note that there are no laws making online gambling illegal specifically in Ghana. With that having been said, it's completely unclear whether or not an existing ban on non-regulated gambling extends to online games. Moreover, it's unclear if this ban would apply to land-based licensees offering online games as well. Overall, there's a lot that needs to be cleared up here, but the expansion of the use and availability of the Internet in this country seems to indicate that the government will put up clear regulations soon enough.
