Liechtenstein is a yellow-level online gambling jurisdiction with partial regulation where lottery games have been regulated before in the past.

Liechtenstein faces a few issues when it comes to online gambling regulation. First, they are a very small place with a fairly low population when compared to other areas in Europe. Second, their previous efforts to regulate online lottery sites failed and ended in bankruptcy. Along these lines, it looks like they will not be able to successfully offer segregated licensing like many other European countries simply for the fact that they do not have the population to support doing it profitably.

The International Lottery Liechtenstein Foundation was known for offering some of the very first online lotteries. However, this company folded in 2011, primarily because of the reasons we've listed above. For the time being, players in Liechtenstein really only have the option of playing with foreign operators, but they do have some viable options that would make regulation a reasonable move.

The only licensing that Liechtenstein has ever given out was to the International Lottery Liechtenstein Foundation. They operated several online lottery sites, but they haven't been around for years at this point. What this means is that the government has shown willingness to license online gambling, but they're going to have to innovate a bit if they want to become a contender in today's marketplace.

One way to do this would be to follow the lead of areas like Malta and the Isle of Man. These are both small areas who have become regulators on a larger scale than just within their borders. Becoming a sort of independent certification/licensing jurisdiction like eCOGRA is also an option.

Player Protections

It's hard to say what the level of player protections will be like in the future for Liechtenstein online gambling. For the time being, players can get in on the action with foreign operators with no problems whatsoever since the government has shown no interest in stopping foreign play. Players will have no real guarantees of protection with this approach, however, so they're advised to play only with the most reputable foreign sites available.
